Opening and PERFORMANCE as part of the exhibition Valets själ

Mauritz Tistelö is a poet, visual artist and performance artist, trained at Valand Academy of Fine Art and the Biskops-Arnö School of Creative Writing. In his art, he navigates the boundary between poetry, visual art and physical performance. Through absurdity, seriousness and humour, he explores our shared perceptions of reality – and what happens when the rules and structures we usually rely on are suddenly thrown into disarray.

In the exhibition 'Valets själ', Mauritz Tistelö explores what is perhaps democracy’s most emotionally charged act: voting. But here, the familiar polling station has been transformed. The election officials are gone, the voting booths hang in mid-air and the doors have been opened the wrong way round. When nothing looks or functions as we expect, the question of the true meaning of the vote is brought into sharp focus. What remains of democracy when its order is disrupted? What does the freedom to choose mean – and what do we do when no one is there to tell us how the vote should be conducted?
