Branislav Nikolić is an artist whose work explores the social dimension of sculpture through the use of recycled materials. Acting as an “archaeologist” of contemporary society, he collects discarded wooden elements—such as window frames, doors, and panels—and transforms them into layered reliefs that reflect the environments they come from.
”One large-scale piece in the center of the gallery. Two weeks in a new environment, far from my studio and without my usual tools and materials. I seek out these conditions because constraints often generate new ideas – necessity forces invention, shortcuts, and new ways of thinking. There is no time to hesitate. Action is required.
The wooden map of Växjö, created with local artists, is part of this process. Each work is shaped by the city’s materials, geography, and input from local residents, making every map unique. I like the idea that visitors may recognize fragments of their own history within it – pieces of old doors, windows, or shelves transformed into art.
The map will remain in Växjö. Its future is open, but what I take with me are the small things: seeds for future work, found only through new places and new constraints.
I must remember this!”
