Matilda Carter has shaped the space, giving it a sculptural quality that reflects her artistic practice. She recently exhibited the work at Marabouparken in Stockholm as part of her Bachelor’s degree in Art. She is now returning to Öland to exhibit the same installation at the gallery at Trädgårdsgatan 11 in Borgholm.
The room’s aesthetic resembles that of an office or a studio, but with significant variations in texture, light and sound. Everything in the room will be constructed by me and covered with a thin layer of latex. All light sources will either be aesthetically enhanced or concealed within ceramic sculptures or layers of latex.
Matilda sews with stitches of latex and found materials as the performance unfolds, making pieces of our host her own. A fragment, a pain, a remnant – slowly but surely, they become part of the room.
Her work and the space create a rhythm; the studio becomes a cube of labour, block-like, or a cell without walls. When encountering her work, one notices details that feel somewhat uncomfortable. What at first glance seemed light and airy carries a weighty history, connecting our bodies as they become material. Some of her creations take the form of garments that carry with them something non-human or beyond a polished world of white corners.
Matilda does what few dare to do today: she confronts reality – the fragile, the raw, the difficult.
The space extends beyond the physical location and, through her performance, creates a larger landscape.
If you linger and delve deeper, you come to understand something more intuitively. The latex she sews in takes on multiple meanings, and the stitches become a rhythm that speaks to our times; it cannot be put into words – every visitor must feel it for themselves.
