Kläppinge 1:18
The sisters Lydia and Selma lived their entire lives on the farm (Kläppinge 1:18), specifically in the cottage known as ‘UNDANTAGET’. Selma’s son, Gustav Olsson, went on to become the last person to run the smallholding on the farm. He was a devoted animal lover who made his living from horse breeding and is known as the last person on Öland to have worked with oxen.
“Kläppinge 1:18” (the farm’s designation) is now also the name of the artistic project that Johanna Karlin is running in dialogue with the farm – a place in a state of constant flux between decay and life. Here, she explores the encounters between people, animals, nature and architecture. The project ‘irregularly’ activates various parts of the farm, but has also been presented in institutional contexts such as Kalmar Art Museum and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, to name but a few.
The project also encompasses the cottage UNDANTAGET, where exhibitions have been held since 2016.
This summer, Karlin herself is using the exterior of the cottage for a temporary installation: a work entitled ÖGATS ARKIV, created as part of the Kläppinge 1:18 project and based on Gustav Olsson’s estate.
The cottage on the eastern side of the island is also linked to the marina in Borgholm through the group exhibition WANDA. In addition to Karlin, the exhibition features Emelie Carlén and Carl-Oskar Jonsson.
For the Småland Triennial 2026, the cottage Undantaget (Karlin) and the sculpture LIV no 8 (Anne Hamrin Simonsson) each constitute an ‘Art Site’.
The projects are led by us as individual artists and carried out independently at our respective locations, united by a shared exchange of ideas regarding process and method, as with previous projects within the Småland Triennial.
