Magnus Bärtås (b. 1962 in Jönköping) lives in Stockholm. He is an artist, writer and professor of fine arts at Konstfack in Stockholm. With a background as a doctor in artistic research, he has developed a distinctive essayistic narrative style in contemporary art.
Bärtås works at the intersection of visual art and literature; his video essays and installations often revolve around biographical narratives and the mechanisms of storytelling. Together with the author Fredrik Ekman, he has published several acclaimed essay collections, including Alla monster måste dö (2011), which was nominated for the August Prize. Like Khosravi Noori, Bärtås is driven by a fascination with the overlooked and the personal on the fringes of history. He is interested in how small details and individual destinies can reflect and renegotiate larger events. In his work, exceptions and the everyday become just as significant as the “big” story.
